Skin Care

Cosmeceuticals are a range of products that applied to the skin are very effective for many skin conditions and are essential for maintaining healthy skin.  Modern technology has provided substances that improve skin hydration, which results in a better tone, texture and colour. Toners, cleansers and simple moisturisers are replaced with more effective agents.

Naturally skins are oily or dry, and may cause breakouts.  Sun damage thins and dries the skin, with oxidative action from superoxide free radical formation, ultimately leading to skin cancer. Red veins and brown spots can also result. Fairer skins are more at risk of sun damage.  Children and people with very sensitive skin need tailored products for prevention.

Antioxidants can make quite a difference, especially topical Vitamin A (retinoic acid).  This is the most effective agent to fight sun damage and acne.  It can be quite stimulating when applied to the skin causing light peeling, scaling or redness initially.

Vitamin C is another essential antioxidant for the skin. It is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent, provides additional sun protection, and is a good preventer against sun damage. It is also useful in treating rosacea.

Humectants are agents that bind water to maintain hydration of the skin.

Alphahydroxy acids, AHAs, such as glycolic acid, lactic acid, or malic acid, improve skin hydration and cell turnover for smoother, fresher skin.
